The book of Revelation opens with a powerful declaration: this is “The Revelation of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 1:1, KJV). From the very first verse, Scripture makes it clear that this book is not meant to confuse or frighten believers, but to reveal Christ, His authority, and the times in which we live.
In Revelation chapter 1, John identifies himself as a servant and witness, writing under divine instruction while exiled on the island of Patmos. He reminds us that the message of Revelation comes directly from God and carries a blessing for those who read, hear, and keep the words written within it (Revelation 1:3). This opening chapter establishes the seriousness and urgency of the book while offering encouragement to the church.
One of the most striking moments in chapter 1 is John’s vision of the risen Christ. Jesus is described in glorified detail, clothed with authority, walking among the seven candlesticks, which represent the churches (Revelation 1:12–20). This reminds us that Christ is not distant from His church; He is present, watchful, and fully in control.
As discussed in this episode of Standing in the Gap Podcast, Revelation chapter 1 sets the foundation for understanding prophecy through a biblical lens. It calls believers to faithfulness, discernment, and confidence in Christ during uncertain times. Above all, it points us back to the sovereignty of Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending (Revelation 1:8).
This chapter is explored verse by verse in our latest episode of Standing in the Gap Podcast.
